My continuing interest in bringing fractals to the web has taken me from my original BoingBoing post about the Fractal Zoomer in PHP to a new generation of fractal generated written in javascript and displaying in an HTML5 canvas element. There is support for selection and zooming of any region of the image, user defined color scheme and saving the image by creating a data carrying URL. — By

The news is filled with reports from Mexico of drug cartels murdering scores of innocent violence is so common that we in America are numb to it.
We rationalize and blame it all on corrupt police, evil drug lords and of course we remind ourselves that this is America and nothing like this would ever happen. We take comfort in that. We, after all, are the good people. — By

Chad Ochocinco (the compulsive Twitterer and eccentric Cincinnati Bengals receiver known as Chad Johnson before changing his name to refer to his #85 jersey) bought dinner for a restaurant full of strangers in Indianapolis last Wednesday. Ochocinco had issued a tweet earlier in the day saying he would fête the first 64 people to show up at St. Elmo's, a popular Indy steak house. Ochocinco, who paid around $10,000 for the meal, said he will repeat the gesture in every city the Bengals play in this season. — By

Now they are back with another scenic route, this time in 3D.

On the 16th September, Pope Benedict XVI will descend upon the United Kingdom. The cost of his visit, not including security, is £20 million.
Many people in Britain object to public money being spent on this visit, particularly given the abundant wealth of the Catholic Church.
Imagine what could be accomplished if this money was spent on a worthwhile cause. — By

Metallica's Black Album was never good. It just took several hundred listens for me to accept such a harsh reality as a devout tween metalhead. And I would like to say the band redeemed itself since then, but they haven't. The Black Album would have been more tolerable though had it sounded like this Metallica/Bryan Adams mash-up by Wax Audio. "Enter Sandman" meets "Run To You." — By
